Novelist. Period. Genre. Adventure, School stories. Elinor M. Brent-Dyer (6 April - 20 September ) was an English children's author who wrote more than books during her lifetime, the most famous being the Chalet School series. Elinor M. Grizel Cochrane is the eponymous headgirl and has always had a 'difficult character'. She takes her new responsibilities seriously, however, and works hard to fulfil them as well as possible. Elinor Brent-Dyer portrays the process beautifully and writes a wholly convincing 'growing-up' story. Lovely book. Grizel's just been appointed head girl in this book, a task which she is not looking forward to, because she knows that she'll have to put the school first and herself last. She's put through many tests, from a fire in the hotel when a group of them are staying for the holidays, to a revengeful girl in school, but comes through with flying colours. Many parallels may be drawn between Brent-Dyer’s fiction and her real life, not just in terms of her experience of school as pupil, teacher and head, but also in other aspects of her life, the most obvious being the holiday in Austria that triggered the first Chalet School story (The School at the Chalet, /).
